Preserving and promoting the art, culture, and history of canoeing and canoe country.

From the first peoples of North America who constructed both beautiful and rugged canoes, to the advent of work and recreational canoes using newer materials that continue to this day, the MCM embraces the history and culture of the canoe.

Minnesota has provided a unique contribution to North American canoeing, with the BWCA Wilderness, Voyagers National Park, and other tremendous natural waters and lands. The MCM provides active programming throughout the year, from the ability to come and view our collection of beautiful historic canoes, to workshops where adults and children can learn about the construction of the canoe.

Our Organization

The MCM is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization that is supported by contributions from members as well as a core of volunteers who provide our programming. We are affiliated with the wonderful Ely Folk School where our collection is housed , and where our programming takes places (209 E. Sheridan St., Ely, MN). We are developing plans for a new site as well!

Learn and Embrace

In addition to viewing our collection, the MCM provides programming for adults and kids. One can take part in canoe building, from gathering the necessary materials, to the methods of assembling them into a beautiful craft.
